Samye Ling Visual Guide

Information about the various parts of Samye Ling

A beginner's mind is often compared to a big waterfall wih thoughts tumbling down like rushing water, but there's no need to get upset or frustrated. Through regular practice it will gradually settle, become as gently as a quiet river, and finally as deep and peaceful as an ocean without waves.

Samye Ling Woodlands Project

Kagyu Samye Ling Woodlands Project

Forests and woodlands have been lost from around the world over the last few centuries and in recent years it has become apparent that we have lost not only a natural resource for our communities and wildlife but also for the wellbeing of our environment.

As part of the '108 things you can do for the environment' His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa has encouraged all of his students to plant trees - in particular for special occasions such as a new monk or nun joining the Sangha or during special ceremonial occasions to emphasise the connection between Buddhism and caring for our environment.

Areas have been selected for planting areas of native woodland around Samye Ling, such as around the new car park, areas at Purelands Retreat Centre, Garwald and along the riverside. We also hope to be able to create new areas for residents and visitors to walk and feel closer to nature.

In May 2011 we planted 1100 Trees of native species, including:

  • Oak
  • Hawthorn
  • Hazel
  • Willow
  • Alder
  • Ash
  • Birch
  • Rowan

We need your help

For £10 you can sponsor the planting of a tree at Samye Ling. This price will cover the cost of adequately protecting the trees from local wildlife and competition from weeds using only organic means, without the use of herbicide.

Trees can be dedicated to, or in memory of, a loved one. While individual trees wont bear a plaque, the names of all dedicatees will be kept in a register. A commemorative card can be sent if you give us the name of the person to whom the tree is dedicated and your name and address.

Please send cheques made payable to Kagyu Samye Ling and address the envelope to:
